Due to damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Debbie in March 2017, NQBP will be undertaking repairs to the Southern Breakwater at the Mackay Marina from January 2018.

We know how important the breakwater is to the community and we have worked hard to maintain as much access as possible during this time.

The breakwater will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the works, traffic, including cars and motorbikes, will be unable to access the Southern Breakwater during the repairs.

Access will be restricted for a period of approximately 12 months.

Cyclone Debbie damage

Initial assessments after TC Debbie showed that all northern, middle and southern breakwaters had minimal damage.

Unfortunately, further studies including 3D laser scanning showed more damage than first thought.

In particular, the Southern Breakwater has suffered damage to the slope facing the sea.

The repair works will see around 80,000 – 90,000 tonnes of rock placed across the three breakwaters. Tenders for the work will be awarded in early December.

Minimum disruptions

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.

NQBP will work with organisers of major community events make sure these can still go ahead.

Signage will be on display and a traffic management plan executed. Noise and dust mitigation practices will also be put into place.

We will provide regular updates on the project to the community.
