Works are progressing to repair damage to the Southern Breakwater caused by Tropical Cyclone Debbie and are expected to be complete by the end of 2018.

The rock armour placement towards the end of the breakwater (on the seaward slope) is approaching completion. Works have also started from the middle of the breakwater and will move south.

Final rock placement on the top of the breakwater (capping) is scheduled towards the end of the project.

Remember, while repair works are being undertaken it is business as usual for our local businesses.

Access to the breakwater

We know how important the breakwater is to the community and we have worked hard to maintain as much access as possible during this time.

The breakwater remains open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the works, traffic, including cars and motorbikes, will be unable to access the Southern Breakwater during the repairs.

Events

NQBP has also made every effort to minimise disruption to residents and businesses during Southern Breakwater works.

For example, we have worked with organisers of major community events to make sure these still go ahead. The Southern Breakwater recently hosted the Tour De Cure launch in April and the Mackay Marina Run in June.

Signage will be on display and a traffic management plan executed. Noise and dust mitigation practices will also be put into place.

Plans are now underway for the Mackay Road Runners' Magic Mile on 19 August and the Mackay Triathalon Festival on 22-23 September.

Help keep our breakwater beautiful

Taking responsibility for your pets will reduce their impact on our environment. The Southern Breakwater is a great facility for pet owners to walk their dogs; however, dog owners should pick up and dispose of their dog's droppings.

Some dog droppings contain harmful bacteria that are toxic to our waterways.

Please use the plastic bags located in dispensers along the breakwater to help keep it beautiful for everyone's enjoyment.

Additional community information

We will continue to provide regular updates on the project to the community.
