About

The NQBP Marine Science Scholarship program provides an exciting opportunity for students to study marine science at JCU whilst building important links to future employers as well as mentoring opportunities. There are two scholarships available.

A core value of the JCU/NQBP partnership is to provide the opportunity for high school students to study marine science at JCU. Providing this funding support will allow students to focus on achieving the most from their time with JCU, in addition to working closely with JCU and NQBP staff, as part of a mentorship program for potentially a successful career in the ports sector.

Who can apply

If you’re interested in commencing a Bachelor of Science (Marine Science) at James Cook University. Women and students identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders are especially encouraged to apply.

You must meet the following criteria:

  • are domestic students, i.e. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa; and
  • are a commencing student (school leaver)
  • are enrolled or intend to enrol in a Bachelor of Science (Marine Science)
  • are enrolled or intend to enrol full-time (minimum of 9 credit points) at the JCU Cairns or Townsville Campus.

What you receive

NQBP will provide each scholarship recipient:

  • $5000 per year ($15,000 total) for three years to assist your studies at JCU
  • accommodation costs during NQBP work experience in Mackay: One week per year for the first and second years and two weeks for year three

What you need to apply

Applications must be submitted on the official online application form via JCU's website.

Applicants must submit with the official form and where appropriate:

  • A copy of your Academic Record
  • A written statement of no more than 500 words outlining:
    1. Why did you want to study marine science at JCU.
    2. What you hope to do with your degree.
    3. Other skills and experience or background.
  1. Academic Record from high school or last study experience.
  2. A Character Reference from a teacher, employer, community member who can attest to your work ethos.
  3. A Resume outlining your achievements, skills and work experience.
  4. A Written Statement (500 words) outlining:
  • Why you want to study marine science at JCU
  • What you hope to do with your degree
  • Other skills and experience or background

Placement activities with NQBP require students to be able to be able to meet fitness for work requirements which include vessel-based activities. Please let us know in your written statement if you may not be able to meet physical fitness for work requirements.

Title of Project: Coastal water quality, Coral and Seagrass habitats of tropical Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef

We are seeking a high-achieving graduate with outstanding Masters or Honours results and publications to join our research team to investigate aspects of coastal water and habitat quality in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage lagoon.  The student will need to be familiar with traditional sampling technology and experimental approaches in marine science. Within the broad theme above there are a range of research topics that may be considered including but not limited to:

  • embracing advancing digital technology and sensor networks to monitor Water Quality, Seagrass and Coral
  • seagrass and/or Coral Resilience & Restoration
  • Exploring green engineering solutions and marine habitat creation
  • developing stress indicators for seagrass and coral for management of anthropogenic impacts
  • developing spatial analysis tools and technology for monitoring coastal habitats
  • developing Blue Carbon Enhancement opportunities on the Queensland coast.

Successful applicants will have access to substantial mentoring, operational and logistical support through an extensive established program of field work and award winning research projects conducted throughout tropical Queensland by the supervisors and their research team.

The research is supported through the award winning North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) and James Cook University Science & Industry Partnership which provides a unique opportunity for the successful candidate(s) to see their research directly applied in solving real world issues and access to substantial resources through the partnership. Depending on the topic of interest there will be an option to be based at either the Cairns or Townsville Campuses of JCU.

Project summary

Coastal water quality and marine habitat health continue to be impacted by landscape and climate change, over complex spatial and temporal scales in Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef.

Managers critically need access to relevant data to make the best decisions for protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems impacted by water quality.

James Cook University’s TropWATER and North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) are offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity for two JCU students to undertake an internship and industry placement. This exciting opportunity is open to all qualifying JCU students,  women in STEM and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are especially encouraged to apply.

Who can apply

Students enrolled in either a second or third-year undergraduate course, honours or post-graduate program focusing on marine science at James Cook University.

What you receive

  • A four-week industry-research placement with JCU and NQBP.
  • A bursary of $2000 to help fund flights, and other costs required to undertake the internship.
  • One week accommodation in Mackay will be covered by NQBP during the placement.
  • Guidance from JCU and NQBP staff during a research and industry application experience. Dates are flexible but the internship will consist of four weeks generally during the semester breaks.

  1. A one-page cover letter describing why you want to participate in the program and what skills you can bring to TropWATER and NQBP.
