Hydrogen and renewable opportunities

North Queensland Bulk Ports is planning for hydrogen production and export industries as well as renewable energy projects across Queensland regions.

It’s part of our plan to support the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan and other key infrastructure initiatives.

The Queensland Government is committed to accelerating hydrogen production and export through the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy. The hydrogen industry in Queensland is expected to create thousands of jobs, particularly in regional areas, through the development of production plants, export terminals, and associated infrastructure.

There are four potential Renewable Energy Zones near the ports of Abbot Point, Hay Point and Mackay that have been identified to facilitate 22GW of additional renewable energy by 2035.

The Ports of Abbot Point and Hay Point will play a critical role in the energy transition as potential major hubs for the production and export of hydrogen and hydrogen-related industries.

NQBP is working with industry partners and government to progress port catchment and demand studies, as well as facilitating proponent feasibility studies and development activities.

NQBP has progressed the development of renewable trade opportunities in Mackay aimed at increasing its port capabilities to handle components related to wind and solar farms and containers.

Ideally placed to meet the world’s demand for hydrogen, we’re setting the stage for the production and export.

Our facilities are primed to support renewable hydrogen development.

We’re gearing up across the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions. The Ports of Abbot Point, Hay Point and Mackay are the next chapter of Australia’s hydrogen story.

Abbot Point

Abbot Point is a world-class port with strengths in exporting commodities for global steel and energy industries, supported by rail and road infrastructure and the Abbot Point State Development Area.

Port potential:

  • Close proximity to potential Queensland Renewable Energy Zones
  • Most northern natural deep-water port
  • Proximity to Asia
  • Next to State Development Area
  • Away from urban development
  • Gateway to major infrastructure
  • Local job growth

Hay Point

Hay Point has the potential for renewable hydrogen production and export capabilities while Mackay can facilitate the import of green energy cargo.

Port potential:

  • Close proximity to potential Queensland Renewable Energy Zones
  • Access to solar and wind power
  • Away from urban development
  • Proximity to Asian markets
  • Industrial land available
  • Deep-water export port

Mackay

The Port of Mackay is an ideal gateway for importing renewable energy and industrial components such as wind turbines and solar panels to support the energy transition.
