All roads lead to a prosperous Port of Mackay

10 Jun 2024

North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) is investing $4 million in a roadworks package for the Port of Mackay.

NQBP CEO Brendan Webb said the project is key for the future of the Port of Mackay.

“The Port of Mackay plays a pivotal role as a leading service centre for agricultural and mining industries and has experienced record trade growth in recent years,” Mr Webb said.

“We regularly seek opportunities to invest in infrastructure improvements to ensure ongoing safety and efficiency of the Port to accommodate this growth,” he said.

“A significant part of this infrastructure is our transport network which includes roads within the Port and our connections to the regional freight network.”

Five (5) roads both within and outside the port secure area will be resurfaced as part of the project.

These include Ken White Avenue, George Bell Drive, and Hamilton Drive (inside the port) and Edmund Casey Drive and Spiller Avenue (outside the port).

To minimise impacts to road users, the majority of works will occur at night (6 pm to 6 am) with traffic management in place.

“Some road users may experience changed road conditions during the project.

“This includes the general public who may use Spiller Avenue and/or Edmund Casey Drive to access North Wall beach.

“However, access to our port businesses and North Wall beach will be maintained during construction.

“We ask that all road users follow the signage and traffic control advice to ensure safe travel through the construction areas.”

Local Mackay-based companies RPQ Mackay and Boral Resources (QLD) have been awarded construction contracts to undertake the works supporting around 80 jobs.

Works are planned to begin this week and are estimated to be completed by August 2024, weather permitting.
