Careers are blooming for three horticultural recruits at the Port of Mackay thanks to North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP).
NQBP Acting CEO Belinda Kenny said the government-owned port authority welcomed two horticultural apprentices and one trainee on the first step in their new careers.
“We are proud to help local talent grow their knowledge and skills while being exposed to a variety of work across our east coast ports,” Ms Kenny said.
“They’ll work with subject matter experts to learn more about plants, operating machinery, land management methodologies and the cultural heritage of our ports.
“At the end, they’ll complete a Certificate II in Horticulture (trainee) or Certificate III in Parks and Gardens (apprentice).”
This is the first time NQBP has offered the horticultural vocational training program, building on the electrical and plumbing apprenticeships already in place.
“We are committed to providing learning pathways to our port communities through programs such as this,” she said.
“The people they will be mentored by are very experienced, skilled and long-serving staff members of NQBP so their knowledge bank is invaluable.
“We have partnered with MRAEL to grow our own talent ensuring we have a steady pipeline of skilled and motivated employees.”
“I lived on a farm so knew I wanted a job where I can be outdoors, working with plants and where no day is the same. I can’t wait to start my career in horticulture with an organisation like NQBP.” Amber Winbank, 19, Trainee Horticulturalist
“I discovered my love for outdoor work, nature and botanicals while working for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. When I saw the apprenticeship advertised I thought it was an opportunity for me to learn more about horticulture.” Seumus Andrews, 22, Apprentice Horticulturalist
“The apprenticeship stood out to me as I love the outdoors and enjoy working with plants. I’m looking forward to completing my Certificate III in Parks and Gardens and learning more about the different horticulture jobs available.” Zoey Tonga, 18, Apprentice Horticulturalist
