openNorth Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) will soon begin improvement works along the Mackay Marina esplanade, delivering a more enjoyable space for the community and visitors.
Over the coming months, NQBP will relocate and upgrade sections of the esplanade footpath, update landscaping, and provide improved access to the beach.
NQBP Chief Executive Officer Brendan Webb said the works are the beginning of a broader program to improve public access, safety and connectivity along the Port of Mackay’s Southern Breakwater.
“Over the past year NQBP has been reviewing how our community accesses and uses the Port of Mackay’s Southern Breakwater,” Mr Webb said.
“Through consultation with local residents and our Community Reference Group members, we have identified several opportunities to enhance the area over the next few years,” he said.
“This first project, supported by Port Binnli, the owners and operators of the Mackay Marina and Mackay Regional Council, will improve the connectivity and accessibility of the esplanade for the local community and visitors.”
NQBP has engaged local contractors JMAC Constructions to deliver the works.
As part of the works, a section of the existing footpath will be realigned closer to the beach. This will be supported by the replacement of an ageing timber revetment wall.
A new cement revetment wall will include stepped seating and a small access ramp will provide improved access for dragon boat and outrigger clubs.
Landscaping works will be completed to improve maintenance and visibility.
An existing manual entry gate at the Southern Breakwater which has reached its end of life will also be replaced by a new automatic cantilever gate.
A new electronic noticeboard will be installed on Ron Searle Drive.
Works are expected to be conducted during daylight hours from early March to May 2026.
Access along the esplanade and to the beach will be maintained throughout the project, with any impacts managed through temporary changes and detours.
Future improvement projects for the Southern Breakwater area include the installation of LED signage, further footpath upgrades to improve connectivity to the Mackay CBD, and additional safety and security enhancements.
