Mark Evans has notched up an impressive career milestone celebrating 35 years at the Port of Mackay.

The North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) Operations and Security Officer first got his foot in the door working to maintain the parks and gardens at the port, but after 15 years his career aspirations changed.

“I worked out in the sun all my life and thought it was about time to try something different,” Mr Evans said.

“I was interested in security and tried it out by doing relief work when someone was sick or away. Eventually, I was given the opportunity to work full-time in the role.”

From helping tie up ships securely to making sure safe and efficient operations continue, Mark, explains a day on the job in operations and security.

“A day on the job can vary. We can be doing anything from undertaking patrols, monitoring the security cameras, checking people have their access cards on them to tying up ships,” he said.

“We also keep an eye on who is in the port and make sure any recreational vessels steer clear of all ships, tugs and pilot vessels when they enter/depart the Mackay Harbour.”

Having left school at 15 years old, Mark has had to upskill during his transition into operations and security. This is something he says he couldn’t have done without the help of colleagues.

“I’m pretty proud of my achievement as I’ve had to learn many new skills along the way, such as working with computers,” he said.

“I’ve also been lucky to work with a good bunch of people who supported me and helped me pick it all up over time.

“Transitioning out of parks and gardens into security has been my most memorable and greatest achievement.

“I came into the job with no qualifications and I’m lucky to have come up the ranks. These days, it’s important to study hard and try to get a good job or an apprenticeship.”

NQBP Senior Manager Port Operations and Management Tim Henderson congratulated Mark on his 35 years of service.

“For more than three decades Mark has been a valuable member of the team and his experience and knowledge of the business is immeasurable,” Mr Henderson said.

“NQBP continues to deliver high-level services to our customers through our extraordinary people. Mark and his work colleagues play a vital role in making sure our ports run safely and efficiently to keep trade flowing across our Ports.”
