openConstruction of a multi-million dollar Port of Mackay Container Depot hardstand is now complete, delivered on time and on budget.
The 1.3-hectare facility will strengthen supply chain resilience, improve freight efficiency and provide regional businesses with greater access to containerised trade, supporting industries including mining, agriculture and manufacturing.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the project would improve road safety, get trucks off the Bruce Highway, and help build a stronger economy in North Queensland.
“This investment will create jobs and unlock new global trade opportunities, as part of the Crisafulli Government’s plan to deliver better services through a stronger economy, and it was delivered on time and on budget,” Minister Mickelberg said.
"This critical port infrastructure supports the Queensland Freight Strategy by giving regional businesses and producers a more efficient, cost‑effective pathway to domestic and international markets.
“By eliminating the need for long-haul transport to other ports we are unlocking savings in freight costs and time, while also reducing heavy vehicle traffic and congestion on the Bruce Highway, delivering a better lifestyle through a stronger economy.”
North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) Chief Executive Officer Brendan Webb said the Depot had already demonstrated its capability, with the first successful trial of export containers moving through the facility this month.
“Carrying tunnel boring machine components, the containerised cargo departed the Port of Mackay aboard FWN Provider bound for Texas, marking an important milestone for the Depot," Mr Webb said.
"The project has been delivered safely, on time and on budget, positioning the Port of Mackay to support future trade growth and the evolving needs of regional industry.”
“With the laydown area now complete, the project will move into its next phase, with a range of activities under way to prepare the facility for future operations, including commissioning equipment, integrating operational systems and final site works.”
Ward Civil & Environmental Engineering (Ward) was awarded the construction contract, with works commencing earlier this year.
Ward Project Manager Michele Guild said the project had been delivered through a strong partnership between Ward, NQBP and design consultant Aurecon.
"It's been rewarding to contribute to a project that supports regional industry while also providing opportunities for local suppliers and contractors," Ms Guild said.
The project has also supported local businesses and jobs, with Mackay-based companies including Heidelberg Materials, Specialised Switch Boards, Mass Concrete Pumping, RGB Electrical, East Coast Steel Supplies, Boral Quarries, Mackay Fencing, and Mackay Sand and Gravel contributing to the delivery of the facility.

Port of Mackay cements reputation as multi-cargo gateway
THE Port of Mackay is cementing its reputation as a multi-cargo gateway to Central Queensland welcoming its fifth roll-on roll-off (RORO) vessel today (8 May 2019). The Höegh America is a smaller car carrier (6,500 capacity) compared to the Höegh Trapper (8,500 capacity) which gained a lot of public interest when it visited Mackay in March. However, the America is still impressive in its own right standing at almost 200 metres long.
