North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) is set to begin its annual maintenance dredging program at the Port of Weipa.
NQBP Chief Executive Officer Brendan Webb said the trailing suction hopper dredge (TSHD) Brisbane is expected to arrive and start work in mid-June 2026.
“Maintenance dredging plays a vital role in keeping our ports operating effectively,” Mr Webb said.
“Much like roads and rail networks, shipping channels and berths require regular maintenance to support safe and reliable freight movements,” he said.
“This year’s campaign is expected to run for around eight weeks, from mid-June through to early August 2026.”
Mr Webb also reminded recreational and commercial waterway users to take extra care during the dredging period.
“The Brisbane and its support vessels have restricted manoeuvrability, so we encourage all boaties to stay vigilant and observe all warning signals, including lights and flags.”
All maintenance dredging activities will be conducted in line with the necessary approvals and permits, and in accordance with strict environmental requirements.
A comprehensive environmental monitoring and management program will be implemented throughout the campaign to minimise potential impacts on the marine environment, including areas of cultural significance.
NQBP has been delivering annual maintenance dredging at the Port of Weipa for more than 35 years.
Maintenance dredging will also be undertaken at the Port of Amrun on behalf of Rio Tinto.
