This International Day of Women in Maritime (18 May), Cindy-Jo Zahmel (CJ) shares her unique experience balancing two contrasting roles.
As a Procurement and Contract Management Coordinator, CJ supports the procurement of a wide range of infrastructure projects and day-to-day operational needs critical to North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP).
She also trades her office attire for high vis stepping onto the frontlines to assist with lines handling at the Port of Mackay.
Read more on Cindy's diverse skillset and how it's breaking barriers in the maritime industry.
How did you start your career in the maritime industry?
I started as a temp Contract Administrator, covering leave for some of our Admin staff about 12 years ago.
At the time a position came up as a Corporate Administrator for the Commercial team and I was successful at getting that job and have been here ever since.
What do you love about the industry?
One of my favourite things is being close to the water, it calms me, and I just enjoy the peace that comes with being by the ocean.
Also, I grew up in Hay Point so the Port was always well-known to me. My dad worked at the Port of Hay Point for 25 years and as a family, we often frequented Mulherin Park right next to the Port of Mackay.
I love the fact that our business plays such an integral role in the community and the economy of our country.
While it’s not super obvious on the surface, what we do here impacts so many aspects of people’s lives.
What has surprised you about being a woman in the port and maritime industry?
How involved women are in all aspects of the business. Growing up, the Port seemed to me to be mostly male-dominated but now being part of the team, it’s been great to see how many women get involved in all areas.
I, along with some of the other women from our corporate office, are part of our lines handling crew and being involved in this has been such a great experience. It gives you another perspective on all that we do here at NQBP.
Is there a particular person that has helped you throughout your career?
Everyone I’ve worked with at NQBP has played a role in developing my career. I’ve been really blessed to have had some great managers over the years, most of which have been male and each time, they have encouraged me, challenged me and always inspired me to do better.
However, it’s not only my managers who have been great champions, but those also I work with day to day, doing lines handling, running tender processes or putting contracts in place.
I enjoy being part of an environment where there are so many willing to be part of the team that drives NQBP forward.
