Navigating the future together – NQBP community groups meet

14 Mar 2025

Future port projects, positive trade results and community projects were key topics at the latest Community Reference Groups (CRGs) hosted by North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) this week.

The CRGs, held at the ports of Mackay and Hay Point reaffirm NQBP’s long-standing commitment to meaningful community consultation and engagement.

The meetings were the first of a new three-year term for the Mackay and Hay Point CRGs.

“NQBP is dedicated to fostering strong relationships between our ports and the local communities,” NQBP Chief Executive Officer Brendan Webb said.

“These meetings provide an invaluable forum for sharing updates on trade performance, key infrastructure projects, and environmental initiatives while allowing community representatives to voice their concerns and feedback,” Mr Webb said.

“We are committed to transparent communication and collaboration, ensuring that our projects take community expectations into consideration,” Mr Webb said.

“The CRGs serve as an active platform for building relationships, exchanging insights, and reinforcing our commitment to responsible port operations.”

“It was great to welcome both new and returning members to the CRGs.”

Member for Mirani, Glen Kelly, said the ports were not only important for this area of Queensland, but for the entire state.

“The Port of Hay Point alone contributes $21.1 billion to Queensland’s Gross State Product and provides direct jobs to around 1,000 port workers.

“These meetings are essential for ensuring that the voices of our communities are heard. It is through this collaboration that we can address local needs and drive economic growth in the region.”

Member for Mackay, Nigel Dalton, emphasised the importance of community input.

"It was great to see the active participation of our community. The discussions around future port projects and community initiatives are vital for the continued growth and prosperity of Mackay.

"The progress on Mackay’s North Wall recreational area and the maintenance of the Southern Breakwater are excellent examples of how our ports contribute to the local economy and enhance the quality of life for our residents.

"Community input is essential in shaping the future of our region.”

The CRGs, which have been a cornerstone of NQBP’s community engagement for over two decades, include representatives from local residents, local government, local businesses, the port industry, Traditional Owner groups, and environmental groups.
