openNorth Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) is searching for experienced maritime professionals ready to embark on a rewarding career as a marine pilot.
Marine Pilot Tomlin Morgan made the switch from ship to shore with NQBP a year ago after spending a decade working at sea.
“I was looking to move ashore into a town and employer that offered a sense of community and purpose,” Mr Morgan said.
“My time here so far has been both challenging and rewarding. Challenging for several reasons – starting a new job, moving my family to Mackay, and adapting to being home more regularly.
“Rewarding for the flipside of those same challenges – succeeding in a new job, watching my family thrive in a new community, and being more involved locally, while utilising the skills I developed at sea.”
Since joining NQBP, Mr Morgan has accomplished many milestones. More recently achieving his Port of Hay Point Level 2 Licence, allowing him to pilot vessels up to 270 metres in length. He urges other seafarers looking for the next step in their careers to apply for the position with NQBP.
“If you are thinking of a sea change, have a go and apply,” he said.
“Everyone has their own unique experience as a seafarer and the team here is no exception.
“Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to marine pilots in the industry. We are always happy to talk about the career and the pathway to this job.”
Manager Pilotage Services Luke Sorensen said accomplishments like these reflect NQBP’s commitment to providing top-tier training and development for its employees.
“NQBP’s dedication to excellence in training and development is evident in its approach to new recruits. We offer regular training including simulations, manned models and observations,” Mr Sorensen said.
“They are also mentored by our highly experienced team through our mentor/mentee program and offered the chance to grow their careers first at Hay Point and then possibly Port of Mackay.
“With access to the best technology and a supportive environment, the opportunities for growth and professional development are endless.”
Mr Sorensen said the Port of Hay Point offered an excellent starting point for those new to pilotage with high standards of training and a highly dedicated team.
“The port has a relatively short pilotage time with a movement usually taking around five hours per job to complete from leaving home to arriving back home,” he said.
“Situated only 40 kilometres from Mackay, the port also offers the benefit of a convenient commute.
“This proximity allows a healthy work-life balance, spending less time away from home and more time with family and friends.”
