openNorth Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) is introducing a night-time vehicle closure for the Southern Breakwater to address concerns regarding anti-social behaviour.
From Friday 6 November 2026, the Southern Breakwater will be closed to vehicles and motorbikes from 7pm to 5am each day. Outside these hours, the community can drive onto the breakwater as usual. Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain, subject to any temporary safety or operational closures.
Emergency, security, and maintenance vehicles will have access at all times by contacting Port Operations.
The night-time vehicle closure is aimed at addressing concerns regarding anti-social behaviour on the Southern Breakwater. These concerns have been raised by residents and through NQBP’s Port of Mackay Community Reference Group.
The pedestrian gate is accessible for people with prams, wheelchairs and other mobility aids, and bicycles.
For more information including Frequently Asked Questions please visit the Southern Breakwater night-time vehicle curfew page.
