NORTH Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) will soon begin road works to create a secondary access for the Port of Mackay.
NQBP Chief Executive Officer Nicolas Fertin said work to extend the road from Edmund Casey Drive to Slade Point Road is starting in October and is expected to be completed by early 2020.
“Extending the road by 500 metres along existing port property will unlock developable land,” Mr Fertin said.
“These works will also improve the safe and efficient operations of the port. It will provide a secondary emergency access route and minimise interaction between port and public traffic along Spiller Avenue.”
Mr Fertin said the community will benefit from the project by gaining more direct access to NorthWall beach via Slade Point Road.
With construction starting soon, residents will begin to experience changes to traffic flow on Spiller Avenue, Edmund Casey Drive and Slade Point Road.
To ensure safety of the public and construction crew, temporary traffic management measures will be in place. These include warning signage, realigned traffic lanes and reduced speed limits.
“The project team will make every effort to keep disruptions to a minimum.”
“We ask that people slow down around the road works and follow all signs and directions given by traffic controllers.”
Queensland-based construction company Shadforth has been awarded the contract.
Shadforth Civil will use five to 10 Mackay-based subcontractors supporting up to 80 jobs during the project. The total project cost is expected to be approximately $2.9M.
Mr Fertin said NQBP will keep the community informed about the project’s progress.
